WWF Deutschland and BUND have within the required timeline deposited their law case against the German permission for the NordStream Pipeline. The NGOs claim the annulation of the permit given by the Mining authority (Bergamt Stralsund) in December 2009. The Baltic nature would be much more affected by the pipeline than stated in the permission. The suggested compensation measures are according to the NGOs not sufficient. The compensation measures prescribed for the German coastal area cover only 40% of the stated damage and will cost app. 7 Mio €. For the remaining 60% the mining authority has asked for merely 3.6 Mio € to be set aside for compensation measures. "The balance between created damages and compensation measures to improve the environmental situation Baltic wide has to be zero," says Jochen Lamp, Baltic Sea -expert of WWF. „The authorities and the company have to strenghten their efforts substantially to guarantee that the damages to the marine environment by the project will be fully compensated" . Large amouts of Nitrogen and Phosphorus would be released by the construction works from the seabed of the Baltic Sea that are likely to cause massive damages to the Baltic Sea ecosystem.
