A Joint finnish-estonian appeal of the Baltic gas pipe Print
Tuesday, 16 March 2010 09:12

meriEstonian Fund for Nature, finnish environmental protection organisation Uudenmaan ympäristönsuojelupiiri and seven more estonian environmental organisations has filed a petition to cancel the permit to build the Baltic gas pipe.

The regional environmental organisation Uudenmaan ympäristönsuojelupiiri belonging to the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and the most important estonian environment protection organisations have made a petition to the administrative court of Vaasa.

"The authorities have given the permit too hastily without examining all the stipulations and they have not given the required reasoning for the permit" says Pertti Sundqvist, the vice president of the Uudenmaan ympäristönsuojelupiiri, annoyed.

The organisations demand that the permit must be cancelled and also the permit to start the work immediately must be cancelled. Secondarily they demand some tightening in the terms given in the permit.

The organisations are especially concerned about the environmentally toxic substances. In January it has been published, that there are 580 barrels in the vicinity of the pipe route instead of a few dozens
that have been previously said. This matter came up only after the EIA. So the finnish citizens and eg Estonia have not been able to express their opinion about the environmental risks brougt by the barrels
before the permit decision has been made.
