The status of the Baltic Sea has changed dramatically during the last decades, and today it is mentioned as one of the most polluted seas in the world. Problems like eutrophication, alien species, and oil and chemical freighting represent the biggest threats. There is a common concern among the countries round the Baltic about the state and the future of the Baltic Sea. Several international efforts, actions and political steps have been taken to tackle the problem. However, citizens need to be involved to increase environmental awareness of the state of the Baltic Sea and of the actions needed to improve its ecological status.

Nord Stream Baltic Sea pipeline assessements breach EU laws, Estonian environmental groups alert European Commission Print
The Estonian Green Movement, along with the Estonian Fund for Nature, have today sent a former complaint to the European Commission that lays out how Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany have failed to comply with EU environmental legislation when granting Nord Stream a licence to construct the EUR 8 billion Baltic Sea gas pipeline.

The Estonian NGOs allege that EU directives on environmental impact assessment (EIA) and conservation of wild birds and habitats have been violated by the member states in the preparation for construction of the 1220 kilometre long pipeline that is intended to deliver natural gas from Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea. Project promoter Nord Stream is seeking significant project finance support from export credit agencies and a range of banks, including potentially the European Investment Bank.

Estonian Fund for Nature started a new project: Active Wetlands Print

Estonian and Finnish farmers, rural advisors and decision-makers will learn more about how wetlands can be used to reduce the nutrient load from agriculture in the ACTIVE WETLANDS project. Simple and environmentally friendly methods will be introduced to increase the efficiency of agricultural wetlands.

Environmental cooperation between Estonian and Latvian farmers Print

Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre, Latvian Fund for Nature and Estonian Fund for Nature has launched a project DEMO FARM - "Development of Latvian-Estonian network for demonstration of enviromentally friendly farming practices".

The aim of the transboundary demonstration network is to disseminate sustainable farming practices in both countries.

Finnish farmer is the Baltic Sea Farmer of the Year Print
meriMs. Katariina Vapola and Mr. Jyrki Ankelo from Finland today received the WWF Baltic Sea Farmer of the Year Award at a ceremony, hosted by WWF, at the International Baltic Sea Conference "A greener agriculture for a bluer Baltic Sea" in Riga, Latvia. For the very first time, WWF and ELF, together with Swedbank, and in cooperation with the Baltic Farmers Forum for the Environment, and farmers' organisations from all around the Baltic Sea, launched this annual competition meant to inspire farmers in the entire Baltic Sea region to take active part in combating eutrophication.
