The state is not enough, so that Estonia could be ready to handle oil pollution situations – to clear up the polluted shore, help harmed birds and animals. Oil pollution can cover a huge area and its liquidation could take months, if not years.

Therefore all help is appreciated. In order to help, you have to know how. As a result, ELF has launched oil related trainings, so that volunteers could give their best in the case of possible emergency.

One-day trainings give general overview of the oil pollution in Estonia and marine environment in the Baltic Sea. Legislation on the pollution is introduced, along with the relevant institutions, organization of the liquidation of oil pollution, equipment and methods in clearing up oil pollution. Treatment and handling of oily animals is very important.

ELF has provided equipment for 400 volunteers to deal with oil pollution. The reserve fund based on the donations from winter 2006 enables to react on disasters, for instance, to flexibly purchase more equipment.
