„Estonian Mires Inventory completion for maintaining biodiversity“ Print
The aim of the project was to complete the inventory of all mires in Estonia, and on the basis of inventory results, to develop recommendations (including reference to required restrictions) concerning potential use of these wetlands. This project was built upon the results and experience of the project "Estonian Wetlands Conservation and Management Strategy", implemented using co-financing of the World Bank Norwegian Trust Fund in 1997.

 Project period was from autumn 2008 until spring 2011.

The activities of the project included:

- field inventory of 13,901 mires of different types, with the aim to obtain complete overview of the nature conservation value of these habitats;
- completion of the wetlands database, exchange of relevant data with the Natura 2000 database (Estonian Ministry of the Environment) as well as the environmental register (EELIS - Estonian Nature Information System);
- development of recommendations (including required restrictions and their justification) concerning the potential use of wetlands;
- organization of an international conference „Mires and wilderness“. Conference materials are presented here: http://www.elfond.ee/et/teemad/raba/rahvusvaheline-konverents-mires-and-wilderness/konverentsi-materjalid

Project results are presented in the special publication

"Estonian Mires: Inventory of Habitats". Compiled by Jaanus Paal and Eerik Leibak.

The project was implemented by the Estonian Fund for Nature (ELF) (leading organisation within the project responsible for the administration and coordination of project activities) in cooperation with the Estonian Environmental Board (Keskkonnaamet).

This project was financially supported by the EEA and Norway Grants and co-financed by Estonian Environmental Information Centre, and private supporter Ahti Heinla. Also Estonian Environmental Board provided in-kind contribution to the project.
